Project portfolio management has the responsibility for insuring that “the right projects are done at the right time.” This means insuring that new market needs are addressed in a timely fashion by market-driven projects, and that internally-driven project proposals are indeed aligned with strategic goals.
Because there are invariably more proposals for new projects than resources and time available, the portfolio of projects has to be constantly filtered and prioritized.
Three phases are involved in consulting services for project portfolio management.
- Evaluation
- Development of Processes
- Implementation
The client needs are identified and evaluated in the first of the three phases, together with the strategic management of the projects portfolio. This includes the organizational positioning of group responsible for portfolio management (CPO – Chief Project Officer, Strategic Committee, Corporate PMO, etc).
The mapping of the project portfolio is developed during the second phase and includes the definition of processes, forms, evaluation and priority methods and other issues needed for adequate portfolio management.
In the third phase the organization receives support for priority ranking and initial structuring for each project.
